Ferrum Rallies Past Sewanee Men's Basketball in H-SC Tourney Opener

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - For the second straight game, the Sewanee men's basketball team was defeated in overtime, as the Ferrum Panthers down the Tigers, 73-69, on Sunday afternoon in the opening day of the Hampden-Sydney Holiday Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee had a lead as high as 13 points late in the first half with a Jordan Warlick triple with less than two minutes left, 36-23. The Tigers posted a 38-25 halftime lead.

-The Tigers shot 55.6% (15-of-27) from the field in the first half and made half of their shots from beyond the arc (7-of-14). On the defensive side of the ball, the team held the Panthers to 7-of-25 (28.0%) from the field and 1-of-12 (8.3%) from downtown.

-However, the Tigers struggled in the second 20 minutes. After a made free throw by Joey Knox to push the lead back to 12 points, 43-31, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run in nearly a four-minute span.

-Adrian Thomas broke the streak by knocking down free throws to start a 6-0 run to improve the lead, 49-40.

-After Joey Knox pushed the lead back to seven points, 59-51, with three minutes to go, the Panthers went on a 13-2 run to take the lead, 64-61, with nine seconds remaining in regulation before Sewanee called timeout.

-As the clock wound down, Thomas found Knox's pass and converted a 3-pointer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded to tie the contest at 64 and was forced to overtime. Prior to Sunday, Thomas drained six 3-pointers all season and 13 in his career.

-Ferrum controlled the extra period, scoring the first five points before Sewanee scored with 2:52 remaining.

-After Mackie Garwood's free throw made it a 69-67 deficit, the Panthers sank free throws late to seal the contest.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Adrian Thomas recorded a third straight game of 20+ points with a 22-point performance on 8-of-14 shooting. The senior made it a double-double with a season-high 11 boards.

-Sean McDonough knocked down four shots from downtown to finish with 12 points, and Jordan Warlick added 10 points.

-Ryan Starr set a new Southern Athletic Association (SAA) record with 11 assists, surpassing 10 last set Christian Molinet of Oglethorpe (Jan. 6, 2013) and Blaise White of Birmingham-Southern (Feb. 1, 2013). The sophomore added seven rebounds and two blocks and steals each.

-The Tigers held the Panthers to a season-low in 3-pointers made and percentage with two and 9.1%, respectively.

FERRUM KEY STATISTICS
-James Smith Jr. recorded a game-high 26 points on a 7-of-16 performance from the field and a 12-of-16 mark from the charity stripe.

-Kajuan Madden-McAfee and Rashad Reed each added 13 points.
