BW Men's Basketball Secures First Conference Victory of Season

TIFFINOhio - The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team secured its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the year with a 61-60 victory over Heidelberg University, inside Seiberling Gymnasium.

BW (3-3, 1-1 OAC) was led by junior guard Luke Schaefer (Medina) who scored 18 points, one steal, assist and rebound. Senior forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) recorded his fourth career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while adding a block. Freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) threw in 11 with six rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) contributed eight, snagged four boards and denied two shots. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) poured in seven points and distributed seven assists.

Heidelberg (1-5, 0-1 OAC) was led by senior guard Tamal Watkins, who scored a game-high 19. Junior guard Dylan Woods pitched in 13 and senior guard Josh Dixon sank 10.

After Heidelberg jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Schaefer tied the game up at 2 with a driving one-handed layup at 19:22. The Student Princes came back down the court and nailed a jumper before Schaefer tied the game back up at four with a post-fade at 18:47. Heidelberg grabbed an 11-4 advantage at 17:07 with a 7-0 run. BW cut the lead to 19-17 at 9:59 with a 13-8 spurt, capped off with a Schaefer steal and fast break layup. On the following possession, the Yellow Jackets seized their first lead of 20-19, with a corner three from freshman guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), assisted by Quiring. That jumper sparked a 4-5 rally from deep for BW, which led to a 31-23 advantage with 6:15 left in the stanza. The Yellow Jackets closed the half with an 11-6 run and went into the locker room with 42-29 lead.

The Student Princes tied the game up at 51-51 at 7:31 with a 22-9 run to start the second half. With the score tied, BW scored the next six points to take a 57-51 lead at 5:07. Heidelberg trimmed the lead to 57-56 at 3:33 with a 5-0 run. A layup from Colombo, assisted by Quiring, and a layup from Quiring gave the Yellow Jackets a 61-56 advantage with 1:47 left in regulation. The Student Princes sank two more layups but it was not enough as BW emerged with its first conference victory of the season.

The Yellow Jackets hit the court next on Saturday December 7 for an OAC matchup at home with Muskingum University.
