How it Happened
The Blue Jays sprinted out to an early 11-2 lead on the strength of three early three-pointers from Ethan Bartlett, Harry O'Neil and Tom Quarry with Quarry's three at the 11:4-mark ending the early spree.
The Bullets answered with an 18-2 run that turned the early nine-point deficit into a seven-point lead at 20-13 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Nick Antolini, who entered the game averaging a team-high 14 points per game, scored 11 points during the run, including seven straight to jump-start the spree. Johns Hopkins scored seven of the next nine points and were within 22-20 after a Joey Kern three-pointer with 3:24 left in the half.
Gettysburg built its biggest lead of the first half at 30-20 as the Bullets answered Hopkins' 7-2 spree with an 8-0 spurt that was capped by a pair of Alex Leder free throws 83 seconds before intermission.
After going nearly seven minutes without scoring midway through the first half, the Blue Jays needed just 59 seconds to trim the 30-20 deficit to 30-27 at halftime as back-to-back layups by Conner Delaney and Sidney Thybulle and a late three from Braeden Johnson made it a three-point game.
Hopkins picked up where it left off in the second half, turning that three-point halftime deficit into a four-point lead with 16:33 to go. Bartlett sandwiched a three and a fast-break layup around a Quarry dunk to cap the run and stake the Blue Jays to a 36-32 lead.
Gettysburg pulled back within one but back-to-back buckets from Bartlett and Thybulle pushed the lead back to five at the 14:36-mark. The lead seesawed up and down over the next eight minutes until the Bullets tied the game on an Antolini jumper at 6:45. The Blue Jays responded with back-to-back threes by Bartlett and Kern, just 35 seconds apart, to put JHU up 58-54. Close sliced the deficit in half with a pull-up jumper at 5:06, but a Delaney driving layup sparked a 6-3 spurt that saw Hopkins take a seven-point lead less than two minutes later.
Antolini drained a three-pointer to pull Gettysburg within four with 2:58 to play, put a Quarry put-back on the other end put Hopkins on top 66-60. The Blue Jays sealed the win by going 6-of-7 from the line in the final 49 seconds.
