No. 18 Marietta tames the Lions to claim Shrine Tournament championship

MARIETTA, Ohio – No.18 ranked Marietta College easily dispatched visiting Mount St. Joseph University by the score of 96-71 Saturday (Nov. 16) evening in the championship game of the 49th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament sponsored by BSN Sports and Fairfield Inn and Suites. The Pioneers improve to2-0 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-3 overall.

Marietta scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed. A three-pointer from tournament MVP Jason Ellis at the 16:22 mark pushed the Pioneer lead to 11 points, 16-5. Marietta would maintain a double digit lead the rest of the way.

Ellis finished with a team-high 20 points and was one of four Pioneers in double figures. Mike Hall scored 12 points, while Caleb Hoyng had 11 points and seven rebounds. Lukas Isaly joined Ellis on the All-Tournament Team after following Friday's 22-point performance with 10 points against MSJ.

The Pioneers led by as many as 20 points in the opening period and took a 50-31 lead into halftime.

Marietta extended its lead in the second half. A three-pointer from Hoyng with 8:32 left in the game stretched the lead to 34 points, 80-46. The Pioneers hit 12 three-pointers in the game.

Brady Thomas led Mount St. Joseph with 20 points earning him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. He was joined by teammate Peyton Meadors, who added 18 points. Joel Day added 12 points.

In the first game of the evening, Eastern Mennonite defeated La Roche by the score of 84-76 in the consolation game. EMU's Tim Jones and La Roche's Tyler Frederick were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Marietta hits the road for a game at Emory & Henry College on Wednesday (Nov. 20). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
