CORTLAND, N.Y. – Joseph Bull scored 26 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out five assists as fifth-seeded Oneonta defeated fourth-seeded Cortland, 84-71, in a SUNYAC men's basketball quarterfinal game at Corey Gymnasium.

 

Oneonta (16-10) will play at top-seeded Oswego Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the league semifinals. Cortland completes its 2018-19 season with a 16-10 mark.

William Lee Moore (Rochester/Greece Olympia) led Cortland with a career-high 14 points, including 4-of-9 shooting from the 3-point arc, in 22 minutes off the bench. Rahim Akinwunmi (Elmont/Sewanhaka) also played 22 minutes as a reserve and scored a career-best 10 points. Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) finished 4-for-9 from deep for 12 points and Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) hit three 3-pointers and ended with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

 

Also for Cortland, Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) registered nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Ricardo Dominguez (New York City/Our Saviour Lutheran) tallied nine points, and Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) totaled six points, five rebounds and a career-high four assists.

 

Bull was one of five double-figure scorers for Oneonta. Andres Rivera finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ian Schultz had 13 points and seven boards, Dylan Trombley scored 12 points and added five rebounds and two blocks, and Harrison Deegan scored 11 points and distributed three assists. Oneonta played only six players the entire game, with Bull, Schultz, Trombley and Rivera each playing the full 40 minutes and Deegan playing 35 minutes.

 

Oneonta opened up a 20-point lead at 43-23 with 17 seconds left in the first half. Moore hit a 3-point to draw Cortland within 17 at halftime, and the hosts roared out of the locker room to start the second half with a 15-2 run to close Oneonta's lead to 45-41 with 16:04 remaining. Moore started the streak with two 3-pointers, followed by an Akinwunmi 3-pointer and a Fitzpatrick 3-point play. Bull briefly stopped the run with a putback layup, but Moore hit another 3-pointer to complete the run.

 

Oneonta, however, had an answer with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to go up by 12, and the gap increased to 17 on a Sean Nolan layup with 10:51 remaining. Cortland made one more push and got back to within seven after two Rodriguez foul shots with 7:33 left, but Rivera hit a layup 17 seconds later and Schultz converted on a 3-point play with 6:14 remaining to make it a 12-point game. Bonura's 3-pointer cut the deficit to nine, but Rivera nailed a 3-pointer with 4:39 left and Oneonta's lead remained in double figures from that point.

 

Oneonta finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds, which they turned into a 31-9 advantage in second-chance points. The guests shot 46 percent from the field and 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point land. Cortland closed the night at 42 percent shooting, 52 percent in the second half, and was 15-of-36 (42 percent) from the 3-point line.
