Big Second Half Propels York (Pa.) to Seventh Straight Win

FROSTBURG, MD – The Spartan men's basketball team pushed their season-high win streak to seven as they used a big second half to earn an 82-67 road win at Frostburg State on Thursday night. The Spartans outscored the Bobcats 51-32 in the second half to earn the win going away.

How It Happened

• The Bobcats got off to a strong start in the opening five minutes of the game as FSU sprinted out to an 11-3 lead. The Bobcats pushed the lead to a game-high 10 points at 27-17 with 9:07 left in the half. York went on a 12-5 run to cut the Bobcat lead to 31-29 but Frostburg State would take a 35-31 lead to the break. The Spartans committed 10 first half turnovers and FSU scored seven points off the Spartan miscues.

• The second half went back and forth early as the teams struggled for control of the game. The game was tied at 47 and that's when the Spartans took control of the contest. York went on 13-2 run, turning the tie game into an 11-point lead. After a Bobcat bucket, York got a lay up from Jason Bady and four free throws from Jared Wagner to push the lead to 15 with 7:31 left in the game.

• Frostburg cut the Spartan lead to seven on a Lawrence Pettis jumper but Darin Gordon drilled a three pointer on the ensuing possession, pushing York's lead back to double figures. The Spartans ended the game on a 13-4 run to put the game away.

• The Spartans shot a blistering 51.7% from the floor in the second half and committed just two turnovers. The Bobcats were just 34.1% from the floor including 1-of-8 from three.

The Spartans are now 18-19 in the all-time series against the Bobcats as the was the final regular season meeting between these two programs as Capital Athletic Conference opponents … Frostburg State is heading to Division II at the conclusion of the academic year … York has now won six of the last seven games in the series … the Spartans have now won seven straight games, their longest streak since starting the season 16-0 last year … York has clinched a top two seed and remained tied with Christopher Newport for the top spot in the CAC … The Captains will travel to PSU Harrisburg to face the Lions in their game on Saturday … senior Jason Bady recorded his fourth double-double of the year with 24 points and 13 rebounds as he continues to be one of the top players in the region … Bady is first in the CAC in scoring (18.7 points per game) and sixth in the league in rebounding (7.4 rpg) … junior Jared Wagner exploded in the second half as he notched 18 of his 20 points in the second 20 minutes of play … Wagner was 5-for-8 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three and 7-for-10 from the free throw line in the second half … Wagner reached 20 points for the sixth time this year as he snapped a two game streak of not reaching double figures … The Spartans held the Bobcats to 37.5% shooting from the floor in the game and that's the ninth time they have held an opponent under 39% shooting in a game … Frostburg attempted 80 shots in the game, the highest total by nine for the year … the Bobcats grabbed 20 offensive rebounds in the game and that's the third time this year an opponent had gotten at least 20 offensive caroms in a game … Frostburg went 6-for-17 from the line as York's last two opponents were a combined 10-for-23 from the stripe while York was 38-for-50 … In addition to the seven-game win streak, the Spartans have won 11 of their last 12 … the game was delayed by 24 hours as FSU was closed on Wednesday due to the weather … it's the second time this year that the Spartans have been unable to play a conference oopponent on a Wednesday … York is now 2-0 in conference play on Thursday nights.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they host the University of Mary Washington in the regular season finale for both squads. The Spartans will honor their three seniors prior to tip off. The game is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
