Oxy Steps Up Defense in Win at Chapman

ORANGE — The Occidental men's basketball team defended its way an important road win at Chapman, 59-46 on Wednesday night.

Ryan Kaneshiro set the tone defensively as Oxy put together one of its best defensive performances of the year and an especially solid showing the second half when the Tigers allowed just 20 points.

Kaneshiro was the primary defender on Cam Haslam, holding the Panthers' leading scorer to just 5 for 16 shooting from the field and 11 points. He also chipped in eight points, and had four rebounds and three assists. 

Austin DeWitz made plays at both ends, denying Panthers low post Chandler White the ball on defense, and scoring a game-high 18 points on 9 for 15 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds, had six assists and two steals.

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty added 10 points and six rebounds and Zach Baines came up big with a couple of important baskets down the stretch, including a drop off by the basket for a dunk and a tip in. Baines had eight points and stepped up his defense in the second half with Chapman face guarding and denying him, trying not to allow him touches.

Jacob Adler contributed six points and three rebounds off the bench and Jonny Crosthwaite played good post defense and added nine points and three rebounds.

Season Impact: The Tigers, which have won three in a row, improve to 17-3 overall and in third place at 8-3 in SCIAC play.

Chapman is one of the teams below Oxy in the standings trying to join the top grouping. The Panthers fall to 8-12 and 4-7.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action with another road game at Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 7 p.m. Oxy plays three of its remaining five games on the road.
