Waltham, Mass., Jan. 20, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team fought back from a 10-point second-half deficit to post a 53-50 win at Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play Sunday in Waltham, Mass.

WashU extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 10-6 and 3-2 in the UAA, while Brandeis dropped to 10-6 and 3-2 in the UAA. The Bears sit in a tie for second place in the conference standings with nine games remaining.

Junior center Hank Hunter recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jack Nolan added 14 points. Junior guard Jonathan Arenas added six points and a career-high eight rebounds.

WashU shot 39.2 percent (20-51) from the field and outrebounded Brandeis 40-27.

WashU dominated down low in early in the contest scoring 12 of its first 15 points in the paint and led 15-8. Hunter had 10 of the first 15 points for the Bears. Nolan's lay-up with 9:58 to play gave WashU its largest lead of the game at 17-8.

The Bears led 22-17, but were outscored 12-2 in the final 2:27 and went to the locker room trailing 29-24. WashU shot 34.5 percent (10-29) from the field, including 1-of-8 from three-point range, and committed 10 turnovers. Hunter had 10 points to lead the Bears.

Brandeis scored the first five points of the second half to extend the lead to 34-24 and force a full timeout by WashU. Out of the timeout, junior forward DeVaughn Rucker canned a three and Arenas made 1-of-2 free-throws to cut the lead to 34-28.

Nolan's three from the wing cut the Brandeis lead to 36-35, and then Hunter's three-point play gave WashU the 44-42 lead with 7:24 to play. Nolan drilled another three on a nice pass from Arenas to break the tie and give the Bears a 51-48 lead with 3:30 to play.

Nolan made a pair of three-throws with 18 seconds left to keep it a three-point game, and then Corey Sherman's three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

Collin Sawyer led Brandeis with 10 points. The Judges were limited to 36.4 percent (20-55) shooting and hit just 6-of-22 from three-point range.

WashU hosts Carnegie Mellon University (8-8, 3-2 UAA) on Friday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Brandeis, 48-12, and the Bears have won 12 of the last 13 meetings … The 24 points scored in the first half were the second lowest this season … The 53 points for WashU are the lowest point total in a victory since 1992 … The Bears have won 12-straight games played on Sundays dating back to last season … The 50 points allowed are a season low and fewest since Jan. 27, 2017.
