Gwynedd Mercy Grinds Out Conference Win Over Immaculata

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy came out on top, 67-64, over Immaculata on Saturday in an extremely close Atlantic East Conference game.  The matchup between the two was the Atlantic East Game of the Week.

Rich Dunham led the game in scoring with 27 points, sinking a career-high four three pointers. Courtney Cubbage added 14 points, 2 steals, and his block on a potential last-second three-pointer was the difference as GMercyU won its fourth in a row and remained unbeaten in league play.

John McArthur added 14 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for Immaculata.

A game that featured 14 lead changes and seven ties, Gwynedd Mercy also rallied from a double-digit first half deficit. After Dunham hit a three to bring the score to 27-20, the team ended the half on a big 10-2 run including a huge steal from Cubbage resulting in a basket by Clayton Wolfe that brought the Griffins within 2 points.  Two free throws from Wolfe brought the score to 29-29 at the end of the half.

No team led by more than five in the second half. Gwynedd, who shot 31% in the first half, responded with a 50% (13-of-26) showing in the second. Two Morgan Bailey free throws put the Mighty Macs up 62-60 with 2:40 left. Wolfe put the Griffins ahead for good on the next possession with a big triple. Dunham scored the final four points to help the Griffins win their fourth in a row.

Mike Piekarski scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half while adding seven boards and four assists for IU. Bailey finished with 12 points.

The Griffins will be back in action this Wednesday against Wesley in Atlantic East action at 8 p.m.
