Oglethorpe falls to Centre 77-54

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team saw the visiting Centre Colonels pull away from them in the second half Friday night en route to a 77-54 victory at Dorough Field House. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 7-8 on the season overall and 1-3 in SAA play.

Centre pushed their lead out over the course of the second half, extending it to as much as 33 a little over midway through the period. They led 42-30 at the break but began the half on a 25-4 run over the opening 10:30 to all but put the game away, giving themselves a 67-34 advantage at the 9:30 mark. Oglethorpe ended the game with a 9-0 run over the final three minutes to cut it to 23, but it was too late at that point.

In the first half, the Colonels took as much as an 11-point lead in the early-going. The visitors led 30-19 with 8:30 left until halftime, but the Petrels came storming back. They went on a 9-0 run to cut the Centre lead to just two, 30-28, at the 4:50 mark of the half. However, the Colonels responded with a 10-0 run over 2:30 to build their advantage to 40-28 at the 2-minute mark. They maintained their 12-point advantage into the halftime break.

Centre shot 53.7 percent for the game while holding the Petrels to 38.2 percent from the field. The Colonels also converted on 51.9 percent of their 3-point attempts and sank 5 of 6 free throws while Oglethorpe was just 6-of-17 from the line. Centre outrebounded Oglethorpe 40-27.

Senior forward Will Perry scored eight points and led the team with five rebounds while senior center Tom Inungu scored eight and collected three blocks. Sophomore guard Tre' Rice led the Petrels with nine points on 3-of-4 overall and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

Oglethorpe will be back in action Sunday at 3 p.m., when they'll play host to Sewanee at Dorough Field House. After that, they'll travel to road games against Rhodes and Hendrix the following weekend.
