Big Second Half Propels Gwynedd Mercy over Lebanon Valley

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – A big scoring stretch in the second half enabled Gwynedd Mercy to zoom past Lebanon Valley, 83-68, in non-conference action at The Griffin Complex Wednesday night.

Courtney Cubbage and Rich Dunham each had 19 points and four assists on the night for the Griffins. Dunham and Matt Sommers grabbed six rebounds each while Dunham also led the team in steals with five. GMercyU posted a big 21-5 scoring run, turning a one-point deficit early in the second to a double-digit lead they would keep the rest of the way.

Zach Tucker led the Dutchmen with 16 points, hitting four of the team's 10 three-pointers.

The Dutchmen used the longball in the first half, sinking six in the stanza to keep Gwynedd off its heels. With 4:23 left in the half, Matt Carter drained his only three of the game to get within one point again (26-25).  Thirty seconds later, Dunham hit two free throws to take back the lead followed by a layup from Cubbage to bring the score to 29-26. Gwynedd led 31-30 at the half. 

Some half time adjustments led Gwynedd to holding Lebanon Valley to only one three in the first 13:55 of the second. The Dutchmen fought to take back the lead with three layups in a row for a one-point edge (35-34) with 16 minutes to go. Dunham connected on two triples as part of 10-0 spurt. Somah Slewion found his touch from outside, draining a trey to cap the 21-5 run to go up, 56-41 with just under 11 minutes. LVC gave it one last push, climbing within 58-48, but Dunham his fourth three and the team's sixth of the half to swing the momentum for good.

Gwynedd shot over 52% in both halves and held a 38-26 edge on the glass. The team committed 19 turnovers, but forced 18 on LVC that turned into 29 points.

Clayton Wolfe added 13 points while Slewion tied a season high with nine.

The Griffins will be back in action next weekend as they head to the College of Staten Island Tournament where they'll play Tufts on Friday and either Bates or the host Dolphins on Saturday.
