ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) buried six three-pointers and tallied 22 points, one away from his career high, as the 17th-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team stayed undefeated by topping Emory & Henry 79-68 in ODAC action on Saturday evening in Crenshaw Gym.

How It Happened

The teams stayed within two points of each other during the first six minutes of the game before an 8-0 spurt by the Wasps gave them a 16-9 advantage with 11:15 left in the first period. Two buckets by senior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) sparked a 17-6 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 26-22 with 4:15 remaining. The game was tied 28-28 with two minutes left before a three-pointer by senior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) with 10 seconds left capped an 8-3 spurt for R-MC as the home team took a 36-31 lead at intermission. Midulla went 5 for 6 from the floor and sank three treys for 13 points.

Senior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) hit three free throws, Bays hit a three-pointer and senior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) scored on a fast break layup as an 8-0 run gave the Yellow Jackets a 44-31 lead with 17:40 remaining in the second period. After an E&H bucket, Bays hit another triple to give R-MC its largest lead at 47-33 with 16:30 left. The Wasps scored nine straight to make it a five-point game at 47-42 with 14:15 remaining. Treys by senior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) and sophomore Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) pushed the advantage back to 11 at 53-42 with 13:13 left. E&H would cut the deficit to three at 64-61 with 6:15 remaining. Bays hit a pair of free throws with 4:45 left to cap a 7-0 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 71-61 lead. Bays sank his sixth trey with 2:40 remaining as R-MC went up 75-63 and would keep a double-figure lead the rest of the way, recording a 79-68 victory.

By The Numbers

R-MC again had four score in double figures. Along with 22 by Bays, Anthony had 17, Midulla added 15 and Adams put in 10 off the bench.

The Yellow Jackets shot 37.5% from beyond the arc (12-32), while the Wasps hit just 3 of 23 three-point attempts for 13%.

R-MC lost the battle of the boards 43-40, the first time it had been out-rebounded this season. Bays and Anthony both had nine rebounds, while Adams grabbed eight.

The Yellow Jackets had 21 assists on their 26 field goals. Anthony had eight assists, while Midulla dished out six.

Notes

With its 9-0 start, R-MC is enjoying its best start since going 13-0 to begin the 2009-10 campaign.
