Stormy Petrels run past Boyce 111-46

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team earned a blowout victory over the Boyce Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Dorough Field House, running past the visitors 111-46 to improve to 4-3 on the season.

The Stormy Petrels got contributions from a variety of players on Saturday. Sophomore guard David Swillum led all participants with 14 points, converting on 4 of 5 field-goal attempts and both of his 3-point shots. Sophomore Will Koch added 13 points on 3-of-5 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in just 12 minutes of play. Freshman guard Ryan Jenei contributed 11 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, throwing in three assists.

The Petrels shot 58.1 percent from the field for the game while holding Boyce to just 24.2 percent. Oglethorpe converted on 53.3 percent of their 3-point shots while holding the Bulldogs to 7-for-29 in the category. The home side outrebounded Boyce 45-35 and forced 20 turnovers while committing just nine. The Petrels outscored their opponents 27-7 off turnovers, 38-14 in the paint, and 24-0 on the fast break. 

Oglethorpe outscored Boyce 67-19 in the first half, then pushed their lead out even farther in the second half as the Oglethorpe bench outscored the Bulldogs 44-27 over the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Petrel bench outpaced that of Boyce 63-14.

"The guys just came out and took care of business today," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "I liked our intensity on defense, and we shot the ball extremely well. It was good to get everybody some playing time and experience."

The Petrels will be back in action on Friday night when they head to Mount Berry, Georgia, for their SAA opener against Berry at 7 p.m. After that, they'll return home to take on Piedmont Saturday night at 7 p.m.
