SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 2018-19 Sewanee men's basketball team achieved history on Wednesday night inside Juhan Gymnasium. For the third straight game, Sewanee captured a double-digit win, this time with 23rd-ranked Emory, 83-70 to earn its best start in program history with a 7-0 clip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-No team had more than a five-point lead for most of the half. When Sewanee made it a 29-22 lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the opening period, the Eagles stormed back to tie the contest at 32 points apiece with five minutes left in the period.

-The Eagles used that momentum to take a 45-41 lead into the locker room.

-The second half saw some adjustments for the Tigers, as they scored the first two buckets in the final period to even the score at 45 all.

-The visitors attempted a comeback to regain the lead, but they did not accomplish the task. Trailing 62-58 with 13 minutes to go, the Tigers made it a 10-point lead on back-to-back triples from Matt Lee and Luke Smith at the under-eight mark.

-Ranked 23rd in the latest D3hoops.Com poll, Emory shot just 28.1 percent from the floor, and the 20th-best scoring offense in all of NCAA Division III was held to 25 points in the final 20 minutes.

-The team came into the contest averaging 92.6 points per game, but on Wednesday, they were limited to a season-low scoring performance of 70 points.

-It looks like the rivalry is renewed on the hardwood for these two basketball teams, as they battled each other for the first time in 10 years. Sewanee's last win against Emory came in 2007. 

WHAT A START!
With Wednesday's win against Emory, Sewanee is now 7-0 on the season, surpassing its previous best, which came in 1974-75. That season, the Tigers finished with a 19-7 record, won a College Athletic Conference Championship and made an appearance in the inaugural NCAA Championships.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Luke Smith led all scorers with a career-best 27 points thanks to his 11-of-12 performance from the charity stripe. The reigning Southern Athletic Association Newcomer of the Year also corralled six rebounds and assists each.

-Joey Knox, in 25 bench minutes, finished 6-of-12 from the field, 4-of-7 from downtown, as he dropped 16 points.

-Hunter Buescher and Matt Lee each added 12 points.

EMORY KEY STATISTICS
-Romin Williams led the Eagles with 16 points.

Sewanee will hit the road for the next two games. The trip begins with the SAA opener, as they face Centre Saturday afternoon.
