HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 28, 2018)  – Sophomore Alec DiPietrantonio scored eight points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated the College of Staten Island 58-55 Wednesday in a non-conference game at Canavan Arena.

Junior Michael Zignorski came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points and senior Ryan Coffey added 11 points and nine boards for the Ducks, who improved to 4-2. Stevens has won each of the last three meetings with CSI and improved to 10-4 in the all-time series (Updated information provided by CSI Athletic Communications).

Christian Taylor scored a game-high 18 points and Adeola Latunji added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Dolphins, who fell to 1-5.

DiPietrantonio grabbed six offensive rebounds and 10 on the defensive glass to finish with the most boards by a Duck since Kenny Gan pulled down 19 against Ithaca on Feb. 14, 2015. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native also made a key layup with 16 seconds left in regulation that gave the hosts a three-point advantage. Senior Kevin Florio had reclaimed the lead for Stevens with a jumper after Staten Island took its first lead of the half two possessions earlier

Pivotal Point

  • After Staten Island used their final timeout to draw up a potential game-tying play, Stevens forced the Dolphins away from their designed play with suffocating defense on the perimeter.
  • Austin Mick fired a wild three with two seconds remaining, but the shot was well off its mark and was easily snagged by junior Dylan Walsh.

Inside the Numbers

  • Staten Island outshot Stevens, 35.6% to 33.8%
  • The Ducks held the Dolphins to just 3-of-14 shooting from behind the arc. Conversely, Stevens made five threes.
  • The Ducks held a 47-41 edge in rebounding, including a 10-4 advantage on the offensive glass. Stevens' 47 boards marked a season high.
  • DiPietrantonio recorded a game-high three blocks.
  • Stevens held the advantage in points in the paint, bench points, points off turnovers and second-chance points.
  • Senior Frank Amari drained his first three of the season.
  • The victory closed out a doubleheader sweep for Stevens. Women's Basketball earned its first-ever victory over NYU to open the evening in the first non-conference twinbill played at Canavan Arena since Nov. 22, 2011.

Unsung Heroes

  • Walsh came off the bench to score seven points and pull down a pair of rebounds, but his defensive positioning with Coffey and DiPietrantonio kept Staten Island off the offensive boards, holding the Dolphins to just four offensive rebounds and three second-chance points.

From the Court

  • "I'm happy that we found a way to win tonight. We got a lot of the shots that we wanted, but they just didn't fall. Luckily, we defended really well, which gave us an opportunity to win the game." - head coach Bobby Hurley
