Oxy Beats Rhodes at Rush

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's basketball team defended, ran the court and shared the ball in a 91-66 victory over Rhodes at Rush Gym on Wednesday night.

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty led five Oxy players in double figures with 19 points on 8 for 10 shooting for Oxy. Jonny Crosthwaite added 18 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, Zach Baines scored 17 points and went 8 for 8 from the free throw line, Austin DeWitz added 14 points and eight assists, and Jacob Adler had 10 points off the bench.

Oxy point guard Ryan Kaneshiro was a wall on defense, and outstanding distributing the ball and rebounding at both ends of the court, finishing with eight points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

Kaneshiro had 10 of his rebounds in the first half. When he and others secured the board, the Tigers were able to make two quick passes to get down the court in a hurry and find the open guy. 

Oxy shot 54 percent from the field on the game, including 8 for 14 from beyond the 3-point line, and had assists on 24 baskets.

The Tigers continue to rebound the ball well, winning the battle on the glass 44-25. Oxy is out-rebounding its opponents 45-28 in three games on the season.

Baines got the Tigers rolling with 13 of his points in the first half, putting Oxy in front 44-28 at the break.

The Tigers continued the momentum into the second half and put the game out of reach by the 10-minute mark. 

Next Game: Oxy is back in action on Nov. 28 against Cal Miramar at Rush Gym at 7 p.m. 

The Tigers will then open December on the road at West Coast Baptist and at La Verne for its first SCIAC game of the year. The Tigers play two of their 16 SCIAC games prior to the holiday break against La Verne and Whittier.
