SCRANTON, PA – Ursinus pulled away in the second half in a 93-75 defeat of Hartwick's men's basketball team on Sunday in the consolation game at the Hilton Scranton Invitational. The loss drops the Hawks' record to 1-3 on the season. The Bears improve to 2-2.
Hartwick trailed by three points, 52-49, with 12 and a half minutes remaining in the contest but a 23-10 run by the Bears over the next six minutes would open up the game and give them their biggest lead of the day, 75-56.
Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, netted a team-high 24 points. He knocked down a trio of three-pointers, dished out a game-high eight assists, and grabbed eight boards. Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) each registered 13 points. They also sank three three-pointers apiece. Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) contributed nine points. Justin Carruthers (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) added eight points.
The first half was back and forth with eight lead changes and seven tie scores. The Hawks held a 31-27 advantage following a Connors' three-pointer with 7:42 left in the half but they went cold for close to seven minutes as the Bears went on a 12-0 run. A Garey three with 55 ticks left stopped the drought and cut the margin to five at the intermission, 39-34.
In the second half, a Carruthers' layup trimmed the gap to one, 42-41, after three minutes but back-to-back buckets from Ursinus built the lead back up. Another Connors' three made it a three-point game before the Bears' run which broke the game open.
The Hawks shot 45.6% (31-for-68) for the game as a group. The Bears were slightly better at 46.5% (33-for-71). Ursinus had the edge on the glass, 44-37.
Hartwick is next in action on Tuesday at Skidmore College beginning at 7 p.m.
