The Oglethorpe men's basketball team got the 2018-19 season off on a positive note Tuesday night in Dorough Field House. They ran away from the visiting Toccoa Falls Eagles 79-53 in a game that was never close and earned a season-opening victory.
The Stormy Petrels got outstanding performances from their two returning All-SAA performers. Both helped key the early run that gave the team an insurmountable lead. Senior forward Will Perry earned a double double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He made 5 of 9 shots from the field and passed out three assists. Senior center Tom Inungu led all scorers with 16 points and didn't miss a shot from the field. He went 7-for-7 and also grabbed eight rebounds, a couple of blocks and a couple of steals. Sophomore forward Will Koch scored eight points and collected 11 boards, as well.
The Petrels jumped out to a 17-1 lead over the opening five minutes of the contest. After a brief Toccoa Falls run cut the Oglethorpe lead to 19-8 at the 11:43 mark of the half, the Petrels resumed building up their advantage. They got three consecutive baskets to make it 26-8 and followed that up with an 18-6 run over the final 7:45 of the period. They took a 44-18 lead into the halftime break.
The Eagles cut the Oglethorpe lead to 22 points a handful of times in the second half, the latest of which came at the 9:43 mark. Oglethorpe used a pair of runs to completely run away from Toccoa Falls after that, though. They led by as many as 31 points and won by 26.
The Petrels shot 49.2 percent from the field for the game and held the Eagles to 28.3 percent. They also outrebounded the visitors 51-33 and outscored them 48-18 in the paint and 14-2 on the fast break.
Oglethorpe will be back in action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Purchase, New York, for the AJ Buchanan Classic. They'll take on Sage Friday at 6 p.m. and then battle either Manhattanville or St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Saturday afternoon.
