Webster Groves, Mo., Nov. 14, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team could not hold onto a four-point halftime lead as the Bears suffered its first loss of the season at Webster University 72-64 Wednesday in Webster Groves, Mo.

Webster remained undefeated at 2-0, while WashU fell to 1-1.

Sophomore guard Jack Nolan led the Bears with 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting, while junior center Hank Hunter recorded his second-straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Junior guard Jonathan Arenas added a career-high 11 points and six assists, while senior center Marcus Meyer had 10 points and seven boards. 

WashU shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the field and had 16 turnovers in the loss.

Freshman forward Justin Hardy ignited a 12-2 run with a baseline jam as WashU led 18-8 12:11 left in the opening half. Nolan had eight-straight points during the run, which included a pair of three-pointers.

Webster answered back with an 8-0 run to the game at 21-21, but a 10-2 run by the Bears pushed the lead back to 31-23. Nolan hit a baseline jumper, and then on the ensuing possession he found junior Matt Nester wide open on the wing for a three-pointer.

The Bears had a 38-34 lead at half behind 10 points by Nolan. WashU had 13 assists on 15 field goals and shot 46.9 percent (15-32) from the field.

Webster cut the lead to one (46-45) with 13:17 to play, but a layup by Hunter and a steal and a three-point play by Arenas quickly made it 51-45. The Gorloks answered with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 53-51with 9:23 left.

Webster led 64-57 with 2:36 to play when the Bears attempted a comeback. Nolan connected on four-straight free-throws and Hunter made a lay-up to cut to two with 57 seconds left. Josh Johnson sealed the gamed with a pair of three-throws with 34 seconds left.

WashU shot 33.3 percent (9-27) from the field in the second half, and was 0-for-7 from three-point range.

Johnson led all scorers with 20 points, while Rodson Etienne (14 points) and Enrique Tankins (13) also scored in double figures for the Gorloks. Webster shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field and hit 7-of-13 from three-point range.

WashU hosts No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.
