DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University placed five players in double figures in scoring as the host Aggies pulled away to a 78-61 victory over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Manhattanville College.
The win lifted DelVal's record to 5-17 overall and 3-8 in league action while the Valiants fell to 8-14 and 2-9.
The Aggies had a strong night from the field all evening as they shot 51.7 percent. They were 14-for-28 (50 percent) from the field in the first half and followed with a 16-for-30 (53.3 percent) effort over the final 20 minutes.
The teams went back-and-forth throughout most of the first half with Manhattanville holding a 26-23 lead with 6:22 left on the clock. Alex Matsinye and Andre' Butler hit back-to-back layups in a 23-second span and it ignited an 8-0 run, and, eventually, 16 of the half's final 22 points by DelVal for a 39-32 advantage at the break. Butler led the team with 10 points in the half.
The Aggies then opened the second stanza with a 9-0 spurt, including points by four different players, for a 16-point advantage. After a Valiants' basket, DelVal scored 12 of the next 15, including a highlight-reel slam by Matsinye, for a 60-37 lead. The advantage grew to as many as 26 before the Aggies finished with the 17-point triumph.
Butler was 7-for-11 from the field and led the team with 17 points. He also added four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Matsinye had 15 points, six boards and four assists while freshmen Lybrant Robinson and Damian Washington had 15 points apiece. They combined for nine rebounds. Austin Chabot also hit double digits with a 12-point effort off the bench.
Rookie Sean Smith paced Manhattanville with 26 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
DelVal will travel to FDU-Florham for a MAC Freedom battle on Saturday, February 10 (3 p.m.).
