DELAWARE, OHIO -- Senior guard Seth Clark scored 7 points during a 17-5 run that opened up a double-digit lead for Ohio Wesleyan, and senior guard Nate Axelrod tied the school's career assists record as the Battling Bishops defeated Kenyon, 108-82, in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Only once did a team lead by more that 4 points during the first 10 minutes of play, but sophomore guard Jared Gerber and Clark connected on 3-pointers to give the Bishops a 24-17 lead just beyond the midway point of the first half.
Kenyon answered with a 3-pointer by Ugnius Zilinskas and a jumper by Alex Laub to pull within 25-22 with 7:27 left before halftime.
Clark responded with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, and after a pair of free throws by senior post Adam O'Brien, Clark sank a pair of free throws and added a lay-in. Axelrod followed with a lay-in to extend the margin to 36-25 with 5:42 left in the half.
Laub hit a lay-in to bring the Lords within 36-27, but junior post Brady Roesch and Axelrod connected on 3-pointers for a 42-27 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 4:32 remaining.
Kenyon closed to within 46-37 on a Ben Stern 3-pointer late in the first half, and the Lords were still within 52-39 when Phillip Crampton opened the second-half scoring with a lay-in, but 3-pointers by senior wing Will Orr and Clark stretched the Bishop lead to 58-39, and the lead would remain no less than 17 points throughout the remainder of the contest.
Axelrod led the Bishops with 28 points and 9 assists. The 9 assists raised his career total to 616, tying the school record set by Andy Winters from 2009-13.
Clark finished with 15 points and a team-high 7 boards. Gerber scored 15 points, all from beyond the arc, and sophomore post Grant Gossard added 11 points.
Laub led Kenyon with 18 points.
