WINCHESTER, Va. - Freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team over Shenandoah 90-56 in ODAC action Wednesday evening in the opening of the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center.
The Yellow Jackets (15-5, 9-2 ODAC) scored a season high in points to remain in second place in the conference standings. The Hornets dropped to 8-12 overall, 3-8 in league play.
Anthony went 9 for 11 from the floor, 4 for 6 on three-pointers, and hit both his free throw attempts. He also had five assists, four steals and four rebounds.
Juniors Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) and Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) both put up 11 points, while junior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) added 10.
Adams had the first bucket in the new facility, and three-pointers by Anthony and freshman Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) gave R-MC a 10-4 lead with 15:30 remaining in the first period. SU used a 9-2 spurt to take its first lead at 13-12 with 9:30 left. Freshman David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) converted a three-point play and sophomore Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) sank a pair of three-pointers as part of a 9-2 run, giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-15 advantage with eight minutes remaining. A 14-4 stretch by the Hornets gave the home team a 29-25 edge with 2:45 left. Anthony nailed a pair of treys, Adams put in a layup and junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va../Glen Allen) sank a long three-pointer at the buzzer as part of an 11-0 run, giving R-MC a 36-29 lead at the break. Anthony had 11 first-half points to lead the Yellow Jackets. R-MC committed just three turnovers in the first period compared to 12 for SU.
A trey by sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) and a pair of layups by Williams gave R-MC a 43-35 lead two minutes into the second half. The Hornets used four points to cut the deficit in half before Neeley hit a short jumper and a three-pointer to spark a 15-4 spurt, giving the Yellow Jackets a 58-43 lead with 10:30 remaining. Anthony had a trey and a three-point play to cap the run. SU cut it to 12 at 60-48 before R-MC outscored the Hornets 30-8 over the final 9:45 as the Yellow Jackets posted the 90-56 victory.
Freshman Max Morrow (North Chesterfield, Va./Amelia Academy) paced R-MC with six rebounds.
The R-MC defense forced 25 turnovers, while the Yellow Jackets committed just eight.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest against Guilford in Crenshaw Gym.
