Jacks Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone, Beavers Put Five in Double Figures in Rout of Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Junior Brandon Johnson (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led five players in double figures with 17 points senior Bradley Jacks (Fort Washington, Md.) reached the 1,000-point milestone as visiting Babson College defeated the Coast Guard Academy, 91-64, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Roland Hall.

With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in league play, while Coast Guard slips to 9-8 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Nick Comenale (New York Mills, N.Y.) and first-year Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) both scored 14 points, while senior Brian Kelley (Potomac, Md.) hit three triples and scored 11 points to reach double figures for the second game in a row for the Beavers. Jacks, who is the 27th player in program history to reach 1,000 points, finished with 10.

Sophomore Packy Witkowski (Melrose, Mass.) led all scorers with 23 points, while classmates Jason Frazer (West Haven, Conn.) and Justin Kane (Arnold, Md.) added 11 and 10, respectively, for the Bears.

After missing its first two shots, Babson connected on 15 of its next 18 attempts from the floor to build a 34-21 lead on a jumper by Jacks with 7:26 to go in the opening half. Coast Guard followed with a 10-2 run to pull within 36-31 on a layup by junior Luke Daniels (Paintsville, Ky.), but the Beavers closed the half with an 11-0 run that included triples from Comenale, Jaworski and Johnson to extend the margin back to 47-31 at the break.

The Green and White scored on three straight possessions to begin the second half and used a 20-5 run midway through the period to put the game away. Sophomore Frank Oftring (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Jaworski converted back-to-back layups, Kelley and Johnson followed with consecutive three-pointers, and graduate student Tim Hasbargen (Munich, Germany) scored off an offensive rebound to make it 76-52 with 8:20 remaining.

Jacks knocked down a pull-up jumper in the paint to surpass 1,000 points, and Hasbargen and Kelley followed it up back-to-back triples to give the Beavers an 84-54 edge, their biggest of the game, with 5:29 to go in the contest.

Babson, which shot 60.6 percent in the opening half, connected on 13 three-point field goals for the second game in a row, and got 28 points from its bench.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday as the Beavers visit No. 12 MIT at 8 p.m., while Coast Guard travels to Springfield for a 7:30 p.m. start.

• Babson is now 54-26 all-time against the Bears and has won 15 straight games in the series going back to 2012.
• The Beavers shot 66.7 percent (22-of-33) from inside the arc on Saturday against Coast Guard.
• Babson has now won 44 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the field.
• Despite having its 27-game NEWMAC road winning streak snapped in a loss at Wheaton back on January 16, the Green and White is 28-1 in conference road games going back to January 2014.
