Geneseo's Quick Second-Half Start Sinks Cortland, 77-53

GENESEO, N.Y. - Geneseo shot 68 percent in the second half to pull away from a tie score at halftime and the Knights defeated visiting Cortland, 77-53, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.

Cortland had a four-game winning streak snapped with the loss and is now 15-4 overall and 10-2 in league play. Geneseo improved to 7-5 in the conference and 10-9 overall.

Zack Panebianco led Geneseo with 18 points and four assists and Tommy Eastman finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Kevin Crockett added 14 points on 4-of-9 3-point shooting and Quinn Carey hit 3-of-6 treys and finished with 12 points.

Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) led Cortland with 11 points. Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) finished with 10 points. Carrel Joseph (Deer Park) hit three of his six 3-point attempts and ended with nine points.

The teams were tied 29-29 at halftime, but Geneseo outscored Cortland 20-5 over the first 5:06 of the second half to take a 49-34 lead. The Knights hit their first six 3-point attempts of the half, including two each by Crockett and Carey, to fuel that run. Cortland was no closer than 12 points the remainder of the contest.

Geneseo shot 17-of-25 overall and 8-of-12 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes, and the Knights finished the game at 57 percent shooting. Cortland was held to 28 percent in the second half and 33 percent for the game, and the Red Dragons made only 8-of-33 attempts (24 percent) from the 3-point arc.

Cortland will travel to Potsdam Friday for a 7:30 p.m. league matchup.
