Jimmy Martinelli scored 20 points and Jule Brown added 15 as the New York University men's basketball team used a strong second half to earn a 83-65 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action at the Sportsplex on Friday, January 26, in Manhattan.

NYU (9-7, 2-4 UAA) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win, while Carnegie Mellon (4-13, 0-6 UAA) dropped its eighth-straight contest.

"We lost two tough games to ranked opponents last weekend and we used it as a learning curve," said Assistant Coach Michael Mcsloy. "We played hard enough last weekend, but we needed to correct some things and we were able to do just that. Wins are tough to come by in this league and we were fortunate to get one this evening."

The Violets led 41-37 at halftime and broke the game open with a 14-4 run midway through the second half. Martinelli was key during the spurt as the sophomore captain scored eight-straight for NYU.

NYU extended the margin to a game-high 19 points, 77-58, on a Ross Udine three-pointer with 6:49 to play.

Martinelli also pulled down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Dom Cristiano and Udine joined Martinelli and Brown in double figures as each scored 10 points. Ethan Feldman (nine points) and Bobby Hawkinson (eight points) both added to the balanced scoring attack.

"We have a lot of guys who can do different things," added McSloy. "Our group is unselfish, as well, and that leads to a balanced offense."

Zach Howarth scored 19 points to lead Carnegie Mellon.

NOTABLES:

- The Violets shot 10-for-23 (43.5%) from long range, including 8-for-12 (66.7%) after halftime. Martinelli drained all four of his three-point attempts.

Cameron Moore dished out a career-high eight assists in the win, while Udine and Brown each added five. Brown's five helpers came without committing a turnover.

- As a team, NYU recorded 21 assists, while Carnegie Mellon dished out just six.

- Oscar Argemi Gonzalez, who came into the game with five points on the season, drained three three-pointers to total nine points.

NYU will conclude its four-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off is slated for 11am at the Sportsplex.
