DeWitz, Baines Lead Oxy Past Cal Lu

LOS ANGELESZach Baines and Austin DeWitz were outstanding as the gritty Occidental men's basketball team picked up another road win on Wednesday, edging Cal Lutheran 64-62.

DeWitz looked upstoppable in the final 5 minutes of the game, scoring Oxy's final 11 points, including the game-winning bucket on a mid range shot with 3.6 seconds on the clock. With the score tied at 62-62, DeWitz caught the ball in the post, faced the basket and rattled in a 13 footer off of the bounce. 

Cal Lu inbounded the ball after a timeout and Austin Cole got a reasonable runner up that missed short as the buzzer sounded.

DeWitz finished with a game-high 26 points on 10 for 17 shooting, with nine rebounds.

Baines carried Oxy on offense early and dominated the glass late, finishing with 23 points on 11 for 23 shooting, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

The Tigers got a spark of defensive energy off the bench in the second half from Jeevin Sandhu and Jacob Adler who helped Oxy jump in front by five points.

Oxy couldn't pull away and even fell behind by three points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Both teams made plays late, but Oxy just made one more.

Jonny Crosthwaite had six points, four rebounds and two assists with no turnovers, Caleb Yellin-Flaherty added four points and seven rebounds, and Sandhu had four points off the bench. 

Cole and Kyle Ferreria led CLU with 21 points each. 

The Tigers sweep their season series with the Kingsmen. 

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 15-2 and 8-0 in SCIAC.

Cal Lu falls to 4-5 and 6-10.

Next Game: Oxy returns home to play La Verne at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
