Nichols bounces back, dominates Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Nichols College men's basketball team rebounded from their second loss of the season in impressive fashion, routing Curry College 100-68 on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Milton, Mass.
 
The Bison improve to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCC, while Curry falls to 1-12 and 0-6 in league games. Nichols is back in Dudley, Mass. on Thursday night when they host Salve Regina University in a 7:30 p.m. league matchup.
 
Nichols received three double-doubles on the night, led by 18 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore Jerome Cunningham, his third-straight double-double. Freshman Matt Morrow's first career double-double included career-high totals in points (17) and rebounds (13), while junior Marcos Echevarria added 12 points and 10 assists to go with four steals.
 
Freshman Nate Tenaglia poured in a career-high 18 points, including 4-of-5 three pointers, to go with four steals, while sophomore Tyler Dion netted 11 points and senior Daequon Antoine chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. 10 of the 11 players to check into the game scored at least one point for the Bison.
 
Curry senior John Coleman recorded a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Spencer Feng had 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Senior Barak Swarttz and sophomore Jared Thorpe-Johnson had nine points and six boards apiece.
 
The Bison shot 51.4% (38-of-74) from the field, 35.5% (11-of-31) from beyond the arc, and 81.3% (13-of-16) at the free throw line in the win. Curry could only muster 35.4% (23-of-65) shooting on the night, including 38.5% (10-of-26) of its threes, and 57.1% (12-of-21) of its free throws. Nichols won the rebounding battle, 48-37, and turned 19 Curry turnovers into 29 points on the night.
 
Nichols raced out to a 12-2 lead as a layup inside from Cunningham forced a Curry timeout with 17:22 to play. Four-straight points from Marcos Echevarria extended the lead to 24-9 four minutes later, and back-to-back layups from Morrow followed by a triple from Tyler Dion put the Bison in front 37-13 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
 
Two-straight perfect trips to the line from Cunningham and Daequon Antoine pushed the lead to 41-15, but the Colonels answered with a 5-0 run to climb back to 41-20 on a free throw from Coleman. The Bison answered with five-straight points of their own on a triple from Tenaglia and a layup on the break from Antoine.
 
A Morrow jumper from the top of the key extended the lead to 55-25 with 3:59 remaining, but Curry ended the half on a 7-2 run to make it a 57-32 deficit at the half.
 
The Bison opened the second half with a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 71-35 and 15:21 remaining. Eight quick points from the Colonels got the home team back to 71-43, until a score inside from Cunningham ended the run and gave the Bison a 73-43 advantage. Curry extended it to a 20-2 run to climb back to 75-55, but sophomore Kash Jackson ended the run with a nifty reverse finish inside to keep the Bison in front 77-55.
 
Curry would get as close as 22 the rest of the way, but the Bison would cruise to the 100-68 victory.
 
All-Time Series
Entering Tuesday night the series was tied at 33-33 all-time, and the Bison pulled ahead 34-33 in the series with the win. Nichols has now won 11-straight in matchup, and 13 of the last 14 meetings.
