Christopher Newport used a 23-6 run over the final 11 minutes of the first half to surge past Mary Washington Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. CNU, trailing the Eagles 19-10 with 11:33 to go in the opening half, proceeded with the run that built a 33-25 lead at the half and then sailed through the second half to an eventual 76-62 triumph.

The Captains had a dozen different players get into the scoring column, led by senior Spencer Marin's second double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and ten rebounds. The victory, in front of 584 die-hard fans on a snowy night, improved the Captains to 12-4 on the season and 6-3 at the half-way point of the Capital Athletic Conference season. Mary Washington is now 11-5 overall and 5-4 in the CAC.

Sophomore Cutch Ellis (11 points) and senior Aaron McFarland (ten points) were also in double digits for the Captains, who out-scored the Eagles in the second stanza, 43-37, en route to the 14-point triumph. The Captains led by as many as 18 in the second half.

"It's always good to see different people step up and make plays," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "We used a lot of different combinations and I was pleased with our overall effort. Eric Shaw is going to get his points and Madison got loose a few times there in the second half, but most of the night we defended well."

Shaw, Mary Washington's leading scorer, led the Eagles with 19 points while Mark Madison sank four three-pointers in the second half to finish with 18. Shaw, a senior who scored ten of his 19 points at the foul line, also contributed seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

UMW was held to 30 percent shooting by the CNU defense for the night (19 of 63), while the Captains made 30 of 61 shots (49 percent). The Captains also out-rebounded the Eagles, 51-34. Christopher Newport's bench accounted for 42 points while Mary Washington's totaled just ten. CNU also out-scored UMW in the paint, 38-16.

McFarland, who struggled shooting the ball, ended up going four for 15 from the field but posted six rebounds and three assists. He went over the 1,300-point mark with a three-pointer in the second half, and now has 1,302 for his career, just two points behind teammate Marcus Carter, who is out for the remainder of the season due to ankle surgery.

The Captains now lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 26-6, and have won the last seven meetings. The teams will play again on February 14th in Fredericksburg.

Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Frostburg, Md., to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State University. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. Frostburg State defeated CNU at the Freeman Center in overtime on December 2nd, 83-81.
