New London, CT --- Senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA) had game-highs of 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while WPI used a 25-3 run which spanned both halves as the Engineers beat Coast Guard 90-64 in a NEWMAC Men's Basketball contest Saturday in Roland Hall.
WPI would outscore the Bears 13-2 to end the first half and 12-1 to begin the second half to open up a 53-35 lead with 15:56 left. The Engineers never looked back and led by as many as 31. Coast Guard held a 32-28 lead with 4:47 left in the first half before the 13-2 run gave WPI a 41-34 lead at halftime.
Senior Aaron Todd (York, ME) (15), freshman Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) (12) and freshman Jake Needleman (Morganville, NJ) (10) also scored in double figures for WPI which improved to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC. Sophomore Justin Kane (Arnold, MD) led Coast Guard with 12 points and nine rebounds while classmate Noah Baldez (Lower Gwynedd, PA) added 10 points for the Bears.
WPI shot 53.5 percent in the win (38-71) and made 9 of 27 from 3-point range while the Bears shot 36.8 percent (21-57) and connected on 6 of 16 from beyond the arc. WPI held a 43-31 edge on the boards.
The Engineers travel to Emerson Wednesday for a 5:30pm start and the Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Clark at 7pm.
