NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team notched a tough conference road win over the Yeshiva Maccabees, 72-67, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Tuesday night. This was Maritime's first win over Yeshiva since December of 2011.
Three Privateers scored in double figures in the win with sophomore guard Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) leading the way with 22 points including five three pointers. Senior center Patrick MacDonald(Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) recorded 18 points while also grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added 18 points, six boards and three three-pointers. Senior guard John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) scored eight points while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
Maritime fell behind early 7-1 to begin the game. Walker scored two quick baskets to cut the lead to two. Yeshiva extended their lead to 10 after a three from the wing making the score 22-12 with just over 10 minutes remaining. MacDonald started to get more aggressive for the Privateers, scoring eight of the next 10 points including two and-ones, making the score 24-22. Yeshiva halted the Maritime run with a four-point play after a three from the wing.
Sophomore guard Jermaine Brathwaite (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) stole the ball and took it the other way scoring on a tough layup to tie the game at 32. Yeshiva scored to go up by two but Maritime responded with back to back three from Walker and McGovern to go up by four, leading 38-34. The Privateers would go into the locker room up 41-37.
Maritime led the opening minutes of the second half, going up 50-48, after a jumper by Liccese. Yeshiva answered back with an 9-0 run to go up 57-50. The Privateers fought back with a 14-4 run of their of own to take the lead back, 64-62, with 4:29 left to play.
McGovern knocked down his fifth three pointer to put Maritime up three and then a layup by Walker extended the lead to five. The Privateers would hold off Yeshiva winning by a final score of 72-67.
Maritime (4-4, 2-3) will be back in action on Friday, December 29th when they host Maine Maritime in a non-conference matchup at Riesenberg Gymnasium with tip off at 2 p.m.
Yeshiva (5-7, 4-5) will return to play this Thursday, December 21st when they host Ramapo at the Max Stern Athletic Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
