Gwynedd Mercy Makes It Six Straight After 87-83 Win Over Rosemont

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins held off a pesky Rosemont squad, 87-83, Monday evening in CSAC action at The Griffin Complex.

Gwynedd led by as much as 19 midway in the second, but were able to get key stops and make their free throws down the stretch to win their sixth-straight contest.

Will Davis paced GMercyU (7-1, 4-0 CSAC) with 29 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs, for his first double-double of the season. Rich Dunham went for 22 points and tied a program single-game record with six steals. Matt Sommers tied a personal-best with seven assists to go along with eight points. Chris Lopez pulled down a career-high six boards as the Griffins dominated the glass, outrebounding the Ravens, 38-22.

Courtney Cubbage hit of the teams four first-half three-pointers early in the stanza for a 9-3 lead. Rosemont then went on a 13-2 run capped by a three from Michael Lyde for a 16-11 lead and a Griffin timeout.

Davis hit two of his three triples of the game as part of a 15-4 Gwynedd run to turn the tables for a 26-20 edge at the midway point of the stanza. Both teams continued to exchange points but two huge steals from Dunham as he scored the final six points of the half to allow the Griffins to maintain their lead going up, 43-32, at the break.

Threes from Dunham and Matt Carter in the second helped turn a 10-point lead into a 63-46 lead with just over 12 minutes to play. Davis added a bucket in the paint to give GMercyU its largest lead of the contest (67-48). Gwynedd found itself in foul trouble, putting Rosemont at the line earlier than desired. The Ravens hit 17 of their 25 tries in the final 20 minutes.

Davis stayed hot in the second, as his bucket with 2:21 left looked to put the nail in the coffin for the Ravens, upping the score to 81-65. But Rosemont did not go away, using a quick 13-0 run to get within 81-78 on a bucket from Nasir Cassel.

After Dunham's driving layup and two free throws from Rip Engel on consecutive possessions, Gwynedd had a seven-point lead with 29 ticks left. Rosemont's Nick Gemmel raced down the floor off the inbound, hitting a layup and drawing a foul. His free throw attempt was no good, but corralled by Jalil Myers who fed it back to Gemmel for a three and suddenly it was an 85-83 game. On the ensuing inbound, Engel's inbound pass fell out of bounds, giving the Ravens another chance, but the defense forced a loose ball on a drive inside the lane from Myers, with the ball going right in the hands of Engel. He would get fouled and hit two at the line with nine ticks to account for the final scoring on the evening.

Cubbage put 14 points on the board and added three caroms. The team shot over 50% for the game (34-of-60)

For the Ravens, Cassel netted 17 points and Gemmell kicked in 14 points and two steals. Mekhi Clemons added 16 and Tarrell Willis with 12. Myers finished with four points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

The Griffins return to action this Wednesday at Lebanon Valley in a non-conference tilt.
