NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team suffered a Skyline loss to the defending conference champion Farmingdale State Rams, 80-71, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
The key factor in the game was Farmingdale (5-3, 3-2 Skyline) outrebounding Yeshiva (4-6, 3-4 Skyline), 49-27, with the Rams securing 19 offensive boards. Four players on the Maccabees scored in double-figures.
Yeshiva (4-6, 3-4 Skyline) got off to a strong start as back-to-back 3-point field goals by sophomore forward Bar Alluf and classmate Simcha Halpert propelled YU to a 10-6 lead, just over four minutes into the game. Later in the half, Halpert drained another shot from beyond the arc to extend the Maccabees' lead to 14-8, with 14:51 remaining in the half.
With 12:08 remaining in the period, sophomore forward Kevin Bokor fed the ball to junior guard Justin Hod, who nailed a 3-point field goal of his own, to increase the Macs' lead to 21-14. Alluf hit a pair of free throws on the next offensive possession to make it 23-14 in favor of the home team.
After Yeshiva went up, 26-16, Farmingdale shifted momentum into its favor by going on a 16-3 run, in a span of 5:09, to take a 32-29 advantage. Sophomore guard Tyler Hod countered with a 3-point basket to tie the game, with 4:24 left in the half. The visiting team finished the period with an 11-6 run to go into the intermission with a 43-38 lead.
In the opening minute of the second stanza, Halpert drained a shot from beyond the arc to slice the home team's deficit to 45-42. However, the Rams scored five of the game's next seven points to go up, 50-43. Junior forward Michael Hayon successfully converted a layup to cap off a 7-2 run for the Maccabees, and shrink the Rams' lead to 52-50, with 16:19 remaining in regulation time. Each team traded baskets over the course of the next few minutes. The Rams then went on an 8-4 run, in a span of 2:51, to go up 66-59.
With 7:34 left to play, Alluf drilled a 3-pointer to cut Farmingdale's lead to 67-64. However, the Rams scored the next five points to go up, 72-64, with 6:23 remaining in regulation time. Yeshiva could not generate another run for the remainder of the game, as Farmingdale went on to earn the Skyline win, 80-71.
For the contest, Alluf led the team with 21 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, while grabbing five rebounds, and facilitating four assists. Halpert scored 15 points with two rebounds, just as many assists, and a steal. Junior forward Daniel Katz had 12 points, with four boards, just as many assists, and a steal. Hayon also scored in double-figures with 11 points, while bringing down five caroms, dishing out two assists, blocking a shot, and forcing a steal.
Tyler Hod and Justin Hod each scored five points and brought down a board, with the former having an assist. Junior forward Tal Gweta had two points, three rebounds, a block, and a steal, while Bokor had three dimes and two boards.
Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of the Max Stern Athletic Center on Thursday, for a Skyline matchup against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
