Guilford Stops Methodist, 79-62

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Alston Thompson scored a game-high 18 points as Guilford College defeated visiting Methodist University, 79-62, on Tuesday night. The home club used a 19-0 run in the second half to secure the victory.

The Quakers improved to 4-3 and the Monarchs dropped to 4-2.

Thompson was 8-10 shooting, made both of his three-pointers--the first two of his career--and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Both Carson Long and Marcus Curry contributed 16 points in the win. Kyler Gregory came off the bench to add 12 and Jarrod Rogers dished out eight assists for the Quakers.

Guilford led 40-26 at halftime. The Monarchs cut the lead to 52-47 with 11:22 remaining in the game. Guilford then went on a 19-0 run--aided by back-to-back three-pointers from Long--and cruised to the victory.

The Quakers shot 56-percent (33-59) for the contest to match a season-best. MU was 22-55 shooting (40%). Guilford had the edge in rebounds, 31-30. Methodist had 18 turnovers to Guilford's 14 miscues. The Quakers led in paint points, 40-26.

Jackson Whitley and Bryan Rouse led the Monarchs with 14 points apiece. Whitley was 6-8 shooting and added a game-best nine rebounds. Davion Ayabarreno collected 12 points for the visitors. 

The Quakers visit Emory on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.
