NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Hampered by 26 turnovers and 35 percent shooting for the day, Christopher Newport fell Sunday afternoon to Dickinson College, 64-54. The home loss at the Freeman Center dropped the Captains to 3-1 on the season, and ended a 26-game home winning streak for CNU dating back to December of 2015. The Red Raiders improved to 3-1 with the victory in front of 404 fans.

"I give Dickinson a lot of credit, they're a solid team and their press really gave us trouble," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "We're playing a lot of young players and this was a great learning experience for us. This is why we play good teams, it's not about wins and losses, it's about getting better every game."

The Captains briefly held the lead early in the first half, but Dickinson ended up forcing 19 CNU turnovers in the opening half, and the Red Devils went up by as many as 14 points. After Dickinson took a 36-26 lead to the locker room at the half, the Captains settled down in the second stanza, but could get no closer than six.

Senior Aaron McFarland led the Captains with 19 points, 11 coming in the second half. Senior big man Spencer Marin posted nine points and pulled down a game-high ten rebounds for the 14th-ranked Captains, who out-rebounded the Devils, 43-32. CNU made just four of 21 shots from beyond the three-point arc for the afternoon (19 percent), and 19 of 54 total shots for the day (35 percent).  Junior guard Mike Hinckley led the Red Devils with 14 points, followed by senior forward Justus Melton's 12 and sophomore guard Bryce Allen's ten points.

Christopher Newport was without the services of senior Marcus Carter for the third straight game as well as sophomore Cutch Ellis due to ankle injuries. CNU was also minus sophomore Luther Gibbs. The defeat was the first at home for Christopher Newport since December 30, 2015, when the Captains lost to Scranton in the title game of the Captains Shootout. CNU did not lose a home game in the calendar year of 2016, and went 15-0 last year at the Freeman Center. CNU looks to bounce back when it opens Capital Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at the Freeman Center, hosting the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in a 7:30 p.m. tip off. Salisbury is off to a 2-1 start to the new season.
