ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) both scored 18 to guide the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team past Ferrum 69-56 Sunday afternoon in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets (3-1) have won three straight this season and are now 10-0 all-time against the Panthers (1-2).
R-MC won the battle of the boards 35-27. Junior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) pulled down a career-high 13 caroms.
Turner hit a pair of three-pointers as R-MC took a quick 6-2 lead. After FC cut it to four at 12-8, junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) hit a 15-foot jumper and freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added a layup to extend the lead to 16-8 with 11:10 left in the first period. The Panthers used a pair of treys to narrow the gap to two at 16-14 with nine minutes remaining. Another three-ball by Turner capped a 12-5 spurt as R-MC went up nine at 28-19 with 4:15 left. The Panthers used an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to one at 31-30 with just over a minute remaining. Adams made a layup and Noe sank a trey to give the home team a 36-30 lead at intermission. Turner had 11 points in the first half, while Noe added 10. Both players had a pair of assists. R-MC held a 13-10 advantage on the boards, with Nowell leading the way with five.
Junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) had a three-point play and a layup as part of a 16-6 run to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets took a 52-36 lead with 12:20 left in the second half. The Panthers used a 12-0 spurt over the next seven minutes to pull within four at 52-48 with 5:15 remaining. Two free throws by Nowell, a three-point play by Noe and a three-pointer by Turner pushed the lead to 12 at 60-48 with 2:50 left. R-MC scored its final five points from the free throw line, with Noe hitting three and Nowell making two, as the Yellow Jackets posted the 69-56 win.
Nowell had eight points and two blocks to go with his 13 boards. Noe paced the Yellow Jackets with four assists.
R-MC shot 82% from the free throw line, hitting 9 of 11. Nowell hit all four of his charity tosses. The Yellow Jackets entered the game shooting 59% from the foul line.
Randolph-Macon hits the road to begin ODAC play on Wednesday, Nov. 29 with a 7 p.m. contest at Roanoke.
