Cunningham powers Nichols past Newbury

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nichols College sophomore Jerome Cunningham scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the men's basketball team to a 117-72 victory over visiting Newbury College on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Cunningham was one of five players to score in double-figures on the night as classmate DeAnte Brutonnetted 16 points in the second half en route to 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Senior Daequon Antoine poured in 18 of his own to go with six rebounds, while junior Marcos Echevarriachipped in 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Junior Josiah Kimball came off the bench to post 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, with freshman Matt Morrow registering a strong debut with eight points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Newbury was paced by 27 points, five rebounds and three steals from senior Daivon Edwards. Senior Jeduan Langston added 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while freshman Miguel Rivera posted 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Nichols ended the game shooting 47.6% (50-of-105) from the field and connected on 15-of-45 (33.3%) of their three-pointers, while the Nighthawks knocked down 27-of-74 (36.5%) of their attempts on the night. The Bison outrebounded the visitors 75-35, including 30 offensive rebounds, and outscored Newbury 68-30 in the paint and had 33 second chance points.

The Bison overcame a slow start to the game as they fell behind 8-4 with 16:41 to play before the Nighthawks tied the game at 16-all nearly five minutes later. Nichols answered with a 31-6 run over the final 11:14 to take a 47-22 lead into the break.

The second half was all Nichols as they opened the period on a 40-14 run over the first 7:34 of action to put the game away for good. The Bison would take their largest lead of the game at 97-44 with 7:40 to play, and cruised to the 117-72 victory.

All-Time Series
Wednesday night marked the fourth meeting between the two programs and Nichols improved to 3-1 in the series with their third-straight win.
