Powell Drains Three in Final Seconds for Keuka College Victory

KEUKA PARK, N.Y.— Junior Trevor Powell (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn) sank a three pointer with 2.5 seconds left to give Keuka College a 70-68 season opening victory over Elmira College on Wednesday at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

Powell led Keuka College (1-0) with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Second in both scoring and rebounds for Keuka College was senior Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa). Greg Tyler (Edgewater, Md. / Southern) added nine points in the win and David Oliveras (Great Mills, Md. / Great Mills) led the Wolves with four assists in his collegiate debut.

Keuka College 70 vs. Elmira College 68

Both teams struggled in the opening minutes to break onto the scoreboard to start the 2017-18 season. Matt Estes (Watkins Glen, N.Y. / Watkins Glen) did the honors for the Wolves three minutes in with a jumper for a 2-0 lead. The Soaring Eagles would take the lead with a 13-0 run midway through the half, taking a 17-7 lead over the Wolves. The Green and Gold scored seven straight, capped by a David Oliveras jumper, to narrow the margin, but Elmira quickly regained its lead. They would go up on the Wolves 34-21 in the final minute, but Keuka scored five late in the half to narrow the margin to eight, 34-26, at the break

Back-to-back threes by Cliff Stevens in the first minutes of the second half tied the game up at 36-36. Elmira regained their lead, but the deep shooting of the Wolves keeps them in the game. A three-pointer by Sam Brown (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) gave Keuka College a 46-44 lead with 12:53 left to play. The Green and Gold maintained that lead until six minutes left to play. The lead would bounce between the two teams until Elmira opened a five-point advantage with 2:39 left to play. Trevor Powell quickly made a layup to make it 68-65. That score remained until 40 seconds left when Cliff Stevens made a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game 68-67. At the other end of the floor, Elmira missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Wolves the ball with 25 seconds left to play. The ball found Trevor Powell on the left wing in the final seconds. The junior drained the three giving Keuka a 70-68 lead. A last ditched attempt by the Soaring Eagles missed as Keuka College defeated Elmira College in men's basketball.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will travel to Pittsford, N.Y. on Saturday to face Nazareth College in the Heritage Christian Services Classic. The Wolves last faced the Golden Flyers in the 2009-10 season and are 6-17 against Nazareth all-time.
