DOHA, Qatar (July 5, 2017) – Caltech men's basketball graduate Nasser Al-Rayes (BS '17) has made the Qatar national team camp for the FIBA Asia Cup, to be held in Lebanon from Aug. 8-20.
Al-Rayes, who recently returned from a successful European tour with the SCIAC All-Stars, was one of 16 players vying to make the final roster of 14 ahead of the tournament. Ranked ninth in Asia and 50th in the world, Qatar will contest the group stage with unranked Iraq, the Philippines (No. 27) and second-ranked China (No. 14) in the colloquial "Group of Death" as voted by 6,500 fans. Each group winner automatically advances to the single-elimination final round, while the second- and third-place teams in each group will play a single qualifier to reach the quarterfinals.
