LOS ANGELES — Andrew Johnson surpassed Finn Rebasso '03 for second all-time on Oxy's career scoring list, finishing with nine points.

But the Occidental men's basketball team couldn't make enough plays when it counted down the stretch, falling to first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 70-66 in overtime at Rush Gymnasium on Monday.

Rebasso, who scored 1,547 points in his career, was one of Oxy's greatest players on some of its greatest teams. He was a leader on the team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in 2003 and won multiple SCIAC Championships.

Blair Slattery '94 is Oxy's all-time leader at 1,676. Johnson now stands at 1,551 with one game to play.

After the Tigers fell behind 40-25 in the second half, they abandoned their half court defense and guarded the Stags full court, pressuring everywhere. Austin DeWitz led a comeback effort with 16 points, scoring 12 in the second half and overtime.

Oxy went up 56-54 with 33 seconds left in the second half after DeWitz was fouled and made two free thows on a spinning move to the basket. CMS' Michael Scarlett, who scored a game-high 29 points, beat the Tigers back door for a layup, evening the score. 

Neither team could seal the deal with one possession each before the buzzer sounded, bringing on 5 more minutes.

The Tigers scored first in overtime, but Scarlett countered with a three and finished with nine points in the period.

DeWitz finished with five rebounds and three assists to go along with his 16 points. Zach Bainesadded 14 points off the bench, Jay Miller scored 12, including some big shots in the second half and overtime, and Ryan Kaneshiro had six points, five assists and two steals.

It's the third time in their last four meetings that the Tigers and Stags have needed overtime for a decision.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 13-11 and 5-10 in SCIAC.

CMS improves to 20-4 and 13-3, clinching the regular season conference championship.
