GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Cody Kiefer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) turned in a spectacular performance in his final appearance inside Bream Gym, scoring 31 points and reaching 1,000 points for his career as Gettysburg College wrapped up the season with a 74-69 victory over Ursinus College Saturday afternoon.
Kiefer needed 24 points to become the 25th member of the 1,000-point club at Gettysburg (9-16, 8-10 CC). He nearly reached that mark in the first half with 21 points and he officially crossed the threshold by knocking down a long jumper from the corner with 10 minutes left in the game. Kiefer finished 11-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the foul line. He also added 11 rebounds for his 13th career double-double.
Senior Mlynue Reeves (Washington, D.C./Church Farm School (Pa.) turned in 14 points after going 7-of-8 from the floor and he added five rebounds and three blocked shots. Kiefer, Reeves, and fellow seniors Pete Christ (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) and Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) were all honored prior to the start of the game. Christ and Kirkpatrick tallied five and four points, respectively, and each grabbed six rebounds.
Ursinus (14-11, 11-7 CC) was led by Zach Quattro with 15 points and nine rebounds. Eric Williams Jr. added 14 points, while Matt Knowles tallied 13 points and five assists.
Trailing 9-4 in the early going, the Gettysburg seniors powered a 12-0 run as Kiefer contributed a pair of threes and Reeves and Christ both hit lay-ups.
The Bears reclaimed the advantage at 24-23 following back-to-back buckets by Knowles and the visitors would slip in front by six (35-29) after a lay-up by Joseph Lostracco with 3:44 remaining in the first half.
Kiefer helped his team regain the momentum with seven points during a 9-0 run. A pair of free throws by Remi Janicot cut the Gettysburg advantage to 38-37 at the break.
Ursinus stole out to a 47-42 lead on a three-pointer by Matt Williams less than five minutes into the second half, but Gettysburg responded with a big 14-point surge, capped by five consecutive points by Kiefer. After hitting his 1,000-point shot, the Gettysburg High School grad converted an old-fashioned three-point play to push the Bullets ahead 56-47 with 9:26 to play.
Ursinus was down, but not out by any means and trimmed the deficit down to two (68-66) on a three-pointer by Knowles with 1:58 to play. The day, however, belonged to Kiefer, who sank a short-range jumper and snagged the rebound on Knowles' missed three-pointer. Two free throws by Christ pushed Gettysburg in front 72-66 with 29 ticks left.
Knowles nailed another three-pointer to pull Ursinus to 72-69 with five seconds left, but junior Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) polished off the victory with a pair of free throws. In between Stewart's shots, the Gettysburg seniors exited the game to a chorus of cheers from the fans.
Freshman Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) closed the day with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals for Gettysburg. The Bullets finished 28-of-54 (51.9 percent) from the floor and held a 34-17 advantage in points in the paint.
