LYNCHBURG, Va. - Senior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) scored 22 and sophomore Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) matched his season high with 21 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped an 84-74 decision at Lynchburg in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (17-8, 13-3 ODAC) tied with Guilford the ODAC regular-season title and will be the No. 2 seed in the 2017 ODAC Tournament. R-MC will play the winner of the first-round match-up between the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
The Hornets (16-9, 10-6 ODAC) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first 5:30. Taylor hit a three-pointer and a jumper to pull within two at 11-9 with 13:45 left in the first half. LC pushed the lead to nine at 28-19 before Midulla hit a jumper and two treys to make it a one-point game at 28-27 with just under six minutes remaining. The Hornets led 33-29 with four minutes remaining. Taylor had a pair of buckets to cap a 6-0 run as R-MC took its first lead at 35-33 with two minutes left. LC scored four of the final six points of the period as the teams stood deadlocked at 37-37 at intermission. Taylor tallied 13 points and Midulla added 10.
Junior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) made a layup to start the second half to put R-MC up 39-37. The game was tied at 51-51 before the Hornets used an 11-2 spurt to take a 62-53 advantage with 8:30 remaining. Taylor buried a three-pointer to cap a 9-2 run as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 64-62 with 6:25 left. Taylor hit a pair of free throws with 3:40 left as R-MC trailed 70-66. LC used a 12-2 spurt to push the lead to 14 at 82-68 before claiming the 84-74 victory.
Noe and senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) paced the Yellow Jackets with five rebounds each.
