ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team sealed up a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs on Wednesday night in the Verizon Sports Arena with a 64-61 victory over the University of Mary Washington.
Junior Dimitri Rucker paved the way for the Saints, recording 14 points and nine rebounds, and was closely followed by sophomore Brandon Rogers who notched 12 points of his own along with six rebounds. The Saints' bench also contributed 17 points in the victory, including big three-pointers from freshmen Josh Giardina and LaDarius McCord.
Marymount came out strong in the first half, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc, while holding the Eagles to 25 points. The Saints also forced nine turnovers and beat the Eagles on the boards in the first half of the game, 23-21. Marymount went into halftime with an 11-point lead and the momentum in its favor.
The Saints led by as much as 15 during the course of the game, while the Eagles never took the lead at any point in the game. However, the Eagles staged a valiant comeback as a result of multiple fouls committed by the Saints.
Mary Washington went 12-for-18 from the line, with most of its trips occurring in the second half of the game. The Eagles' John Lutkenhaus recorded 11 points and went six for seven from the free-throw line as he paved the way for their comeback attempt.
However, the attempt fell short at perhaps the most critical point in the game. With just four seconds to play, Rogers was fouled and made both free throws to force a tough three-pointer for UMW.
On the inbounds play to set up the last shot attempt for the Eagles, the pass was stolen by senior Michael Anderson to seal the win for the Saints, 64-61.
Marymount travels to Penn State University-Harrisburg on Saturday, February 18 to face off against the Lions in the final regular-season game before playoffs. The Saints currently sit at 8-9 in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
