Camden, NJ – Sophomore forward Jordan Roberson scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as Montclair State closed out its regular season slate with a 66-57 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday evening.
Junior Vince Anfield scored a team-high 17 points as the Red Hawks overcame a slim halftime deficit to post its second straight victory. Montclair finished the regular-season at 13-12 overall and 10-8 in the NJAC as it claimed the No. 5 seed in the NJAC Tournament.
Montclair State will face fourth-seeded Rowan University in the first round on Saturday, February 18 in Glassboro at 3:00 pm. The Red Hawks, making their first conference tournament appearance since 2014, defeated the Profs twice during the regular season winning 92-78 in Glassboro in December and 83-77 at the Panzer Athletic Center in late January. It will be the fifth time the two meet in the NJAC Tournament which includes title game clashes in 1981 and 1994. The Red Hawks won the last meeting 83-72 in the 2008 first round.
Montclair trailed 34-32 at halftime but took the lead 39-38 with 16:34 to go in the second after Brandon Channer, who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, hit from behind the arc. The lead would change hands three more time before the Red Hawks went back on top at 44-43 on a layup by Roberson near the 11-minute mark.
The Red Hawks would get up by three however Rutgers-Camden battled back and led 49-48 after Isaac Destin sank two free throws with 8:11 to play. Daniel Ramis regained the lead with a three-pointer and another by Anfield with 6:49 left extended the advantage to 54-49.
Sahfeek Taylor got Rutgers-Camden within three after a three-point however Montclair ripped off the next five points taking a 59-52 lead with four minutes to play when Anfield drained a three-pointer.
Roberson finished with a double-double pulling down 14 rebounds. Justin Porter had three points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
