Cortland Men Clinch Top-Four SUNYAC Spot With Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Zach Lydon (Elizaville/Stissing Mountain) scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Cortland guaranteed itself a top-four spot in the SUNYAC standings with a 75-56 victory at Fredonia.

The Red Dragons are 16-7 overall and 11-5 in league play with two games remaining. Cortland can finish anywhere between second and fourth in the league based on the outcome of its final two games - road contests at Brockport and Geneseo next Friday and Saturday - along with other league results. The second-place team will earn a bye into the SUNYAC tournament semifinals, while the third and fourth-place teams will host first-round games.

Lydon made 9-of-14 shots from the floor. James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) finished with 14 points, while he and Lydon each connected on 3-of-6 attempts from 3-point range. Morales and Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) shared the team lead with four assists.

Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) and Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) each scored 11 points. Kelly also grabbed five rebounds, while Prendergast shot 5-of-6 from the field. Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) fell just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Kareem Brown led Fredonia (10-14, 7-10 SUNYAC) with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Richard De La Cruz scored 12 points with three 3-pointers.

Cortland led by as many as 14 points in the first half and held a 43-30 halftime lead. Lydon scored 12 points and Morales 11 in the opening 20 minutes. The Red Dragons' advantage remained in double figures the entire second half.

Cortland shot 55 percent from the field, 59 percent in the opening half, and 50 percent (10-of-20) from the 3-point line. Fredonia ended at 40 percent from the field and 39 percent (9-of-23) from the arc.
