NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team picked up its 17th win of the 2016-2017 season, rolling past SUNY New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night, 84-70.
The Green and Gold improve to 17-5 on the year and 12-3 in league play while the Hawks fall to 1-20 on the year and now have a mark of 0-15 in the SUNYAC.
With some fresh faces in the starting rotation, the Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, with scores on back-to-back possessions from Marcus Blythers and Justin Summers for the early 4-0 edge.
Brockport relinquished its lead to New Paltz for some time in the first half, but by the 3:24 mark, following two scores from Devonn Gavin and a Hamed Shamseldin layup, the Green and Gold took a 32-30 lead, and never looked back.
Brockport closed the half strong with a six point run, sparked by a dunk from Blythers, while a jumper from the senior closed the half and gave the Golden Eagles a 40-34 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Brockport took charge, and quickly built out to a double digit advantage after a pair of Clyfton Lyerly free throws and a Matthew Smith layup posted a 44-34 lead less than two minutes into play. An 8-3 Golden Eagle run, with triples from Mitch Cote and Shamseldin, helped the Green and Gold hit their largest lead, a 17-point advantage with 5:46 to play.
The Golden Eagles maintained control of the contest down the stretch, and four straight Cote free throws put the finishing touches on the 84-70 Brockport victory.
Lyerly led the Brockport offensive efforts, putting up 19 points in just 15 minutes of action. Shamseldin did it all, chipping in 13 points, five boards, four assists, and two steals. Blythers hit double digits with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Gavin added 10 points and three steals.
The Brockport defense stood strong, forcing 28 New Paltz turnovers, which they used for 40 points. The Golden Eagles got a lift from their bench, with 50 bench points and edged the Hawks in the paint battle, 30-24.
Brockport will be back in action in their final regular season road contest of the year, as the Golden Eagles take on Oneonta on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
