Roos pull away in second half for win over Bears

CANTON, N.Y.—After a back-and-forth first half, SUNY Canton (13-8) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-20) in the second for an 86-62 victory on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) led the Bears with 25 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and fellow sophomore guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) scored 12 points.
 
Two 3-pointers from Langley and a layup from freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) got Potsdam within 9-8 just three minutes into the contest. The Kangaroos then took off with a 24-6 run to take a 33-14 lead over the next nine minutes. Sam Annorh led the charge with nine points for Canton. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) drained a three at 8:18 to start a 14-0 answer from the Bears, in which he had 10 points. A Thomas layup at 4:03 closed the deficit to 33-28. Canton outscored Potsdam 14-10 over the rest of the half to take a 47-38 advantage into the break. The Bears controlled the boards in the opening 20 minutes with a 23-14 edge, including a dominating 10-1 advantage on the offensive glass. Onabor had 20 points in the first half to Annorh's 17.
 
Sophomore forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) hit a jumper with 15:00 remaining to get the Bears within 52-44. The Roos controlled the game the rest of the way. Romario Fletcher sank four straight free throws after a Bears technical foul to finish a 16-6 run. After Potsdam junior captain Kevin Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) hit a 3-pointer to make it 68-53 Canton, the Kangaroos took off again. They finished the game with a final 18-9 run.
 
Kane finished with six points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Aaron Armstrong (Lisbon, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) added six points and five boards. Annorh had a game-high 36 points for the Roos. Adrian Williams scored 19 and Fletcher just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
Potsdam outrebounded Canton 44-40 and 20-10, offensively.
 
The Bears host Plattsburgh in their home finale on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
