GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team earned a tough 87-84 Colonial States Athletic Conference victory over visiting Rosemont on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. With the win, the Griffins sweep the season series with the Ravens and improve to 17-4 overall and 11-3 in conference action.

Four Griffins lead to offensive charge with Arron Goodman's team-high 19 points. Ty Jones (17), Rip Engel (16) and Cedric Elleby (11) spread out the wealth.

Prior to the game, the team and coaching staff honored Jason Cavell, Drew Dietterich, Goodman, and Elleby and their families in a special ceremony.

After a slow start to the first half, GMercyU found themselves in an early 13-7 hole after a Jamier Hughes three-point play. A pair of Rich Dunham steals that led to transition baskets would cap a 6-0 Griffin run to tie the game 13-13 at the 11:34 mark of the first half. A Goodman jumper followed by a pair of Courtney Cubbage free throws would give Gwynedd a 17-15 lead. Rip Engel would keep the scoring run going (9-0), connecting on a layup and a three pointer for a 22-15 GM lead.

Rosemont would answer with a 5-0 spurt to cut the lead back to two (22-20). Ty Jones would score back-to-back Griffin buckets followed by a Dietterich alley-oop finish at the rim, and another Engel layup to put GM up 30-20 at the 4:36 mark for their largest lead of the game. Rosemont would not go away coming back with their own 7-0 run capped by a Clayton Wolfe three pointer to trail 30-27. The Ravens would tie the game 32-32 on a Charles Presley three but the Griffins would retake the lead on a pair of Engel free throws (34-32). Gwynedd battle to a 39-38 lead at the break.

The Griffins would start hot in the second half thanks to an Engel three pointer and a pair of layups by Jones and Cedric Elleby for a 46-38 lead. Khai Roberts hit a three and Hughes followed with a breakaway dunk to bring the Ravens back (50-48), but Engel would connect on his third triple of the game for the 53-48 advantage with 13:52 to go.

The Ravens would take a 58-57 lead on a Kyle Lafferty Layup but the Griffins would answer on the next possession with a big three from Matt Sommers for a 60-58 advantage with 9:22 in the contest.

Rosemont would keep the game within a possession over the next nine minutes but the Griffins would not give up the lead holding a four-point edge with a Goodman tip in and a pair of Elleby free throws with just over three minutes left. Trailing by seven (81-74) Rosemont connected on a four-point possession with a Kyle Lafferty three pointer and Hughes free throw to cut the Gwynedd lead to three. A GM turnover and Roberts layup would cut the lead to one but Jones would respond with a twisting layup with 26 seconds left for an 83-80 lead.

Hughes would connect on a pair of free throws and Elleby made one of two from the line on the other end of the floor. Rosemont had possession and trailed 84-82, but a huge Griffin defensive stand forced a Rosemont miss and foul. The Griffins were only able to stretch the lead to three (85-82). After a Griffin foul Wolfe made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one. Ty Jones would put the game away with his sixteenth and seventeenth point for the 87-84 lead. The Ravens had one more chance with a long desperation heave with less than a second left but it wouldn't go for the Griffin victory.

Gwynedd out-rebounded Rosemont 44-37. Goodman, Jones and Courtney Cubbage all pulled down nine apiece for the Griffins. Cubbage and Dietterich each had three blocks, as the team totaled a season-high 10 rejections.  Dunham and Cubbage also handed out five assists apiece.

Hughes grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with his 17 points for the Ravens (11-10, 9-5 CSAC). Roberts led the Ravens with 19 points on five three pointers made. Wolfe (18) and Lafferty (13) rounded out the double-digit efforts. Rosemont would connect on 13 three-pointers on the day but shoot only 34% (25-of-73) in total.

Gwynedd was over 50% from the floor, going 33-of-60 (55%).

The Griffins return back to action on Wednesday evening when they host Immaculata for a 8 p.m. tip.
