WESTFIELD, Mass. – Six players scored in double figures for Westfield State as the Owls outdistanced MCLA 85-65 in a MASCAC men's basketball game at the Woodward Center on Wednesday night.
Senior center Shane Pasquantonio (Ashland, Mass.) led the way for Westfield with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior guard Allister Williams (Bedford/Boston, Mass.) matched Pasquantonio with 17 points while shooting 7-11 from the floor and 3-5 from three-point range.
Westfield sprinted to a 41-26 halftiems lead on the strength of 50 percent shooting from the floor and 7-9 shooting from three.
The Trailblazers made a run at the Owls in the second half, shaving the lead down to nine points, 63-54 on a three point play by Keiland Cross (Pittsfield, Mass.) with 7:10 left to play to cap a 14-4 run.
Westfield responded by scoring the next seven points, extending its lead back to 16, 70-54, on a Williams layup with 4:55 to play and the Owls were not seriously threatened from that point.
Cross finished with 18 points to lead MCLA, and added six rebounds and five assists. Joe Wiggins (St. Joseph/Pittsfield, Mass.) added 16 points, and Tyler McKay (Catholic Central/Clifton Park, N.Y.) 13.
Westfield got 14 from Peter Mafo (Lynn Classical/Lynn, Mass.), 13 points and nine rebounds from Marcus Collins (Cambridge Rindge and Latin/Cambridge, Mass), 12 from Jesus Sanchez (Holderness School/Springfield, Mass.) and 10 from Jose Allen (Amherst, Mass.) in a widespread scoring attack.
Westfield (6-13, 3-5 MASCAC) will next travel to Framingham State on Saturday, while the Trailblazers (2-17, 0-8 MASAC) will host Salem State on Saturday.
