Quakers Pull Away from Marlins in 83-66 Win
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College outscored the Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team by 17 points in the first half to capture an 83-66 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday.
The Marlins led just once, 3-2, when Khory Moore connected on a 3-pointer on the Marlins second possession of the game. Guilford responded with a 10-0 run in which Carson Long contributed six points on a pair of 3-pointers.
Kaelin Poe ended the scoreless streak with a layup t0 make it 12-5, but another 10-straight points pushed Guilford out even farther as the hosts took a 22-5 lead. Jarrod Rogers had five points in that spurt, ultimately pushing Guilford to a 20-2 run over a span of 7:21 in the first.
Guilford led by at least 13 points the remainder of the first half, taking a 44-27 lead into intermission.
The Quakers shot 51.4% from the field in the first half, going 5-11 (45.5%) from 3-point range. The Guilford defense held the Marlins to just nine made field goals in the first half, shooting 30% from the field and 25% from distance.
Virginia Wesleyan bounced back in the second half, shooting 51.9% overall and 42.9% from deep, but Guilford was a little bit hotter, shooting an incredible 68.2% after the halftime break.
Long finished with a game-high 26 points for Guilford (16-3/9-1) while Dominique Henderson and Alston Thompson had 11 points each. Rogers tallied 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Moore led the Marlins with 20 points while Tim Jones added 17, with 15 coming in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan (13-6/6-4) hosts Eastern Mennonite University (9-10/3-7) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC start.

The Marlins are 11-5 when Moore leads the team in scoring…This is the third time the Marlins have lost two games in a row this year (each streak ended on the third game)…The Marlins are 35-20 against Guilford, losing the last two…Virginia Wesleyan's last win in Greensboro was 2014-15 (84-66)…Moore had one steal on Saturday, giving him 180 for his career, two away from the all-time record set by Thomas Sumpter '07...Moore now has 14 20-point games in 18 games this year.
