FROSTBURG, Md. - Christopher Newport again relied on a big second-half surge to roll to its eighth straight win. The Captains, ranked third in the nation, posted a 93-67 victory Saturday at Bobcat Arena over Frostburg State.

The Capital Athletic Conference triumph sets up a first-place showdown Wednesday night when CNU hosts Salisbury at the Freeman Center. Both squads are now 9-1 in CAC play following Saturday victories.

Christopher Newport (15-2, 9-1) led by just seven at the half Saturday afternoon, 41-34, but blew open the game in the second stanza. CNU got a balanced scoring effort in the 26-point victory, as four Captains reached double figures led by senior Tim Daly's 15-point performance.

"I thought we were really unselfish today, even more than usual," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the road win. "There's not much to be critical of, we really did what we needed to do and achieved our goals for the game."

CNU shot 56.5 percent for the day (35 of 62) and knocked down ten of 20 from three-point range. The Captains' defense, second in the nation in opponent field goal percentage, held the Bobcats to just 38.8 percent for the day (26 of 67). CNU committed just eight turnovers in the conference battle.

Junior Marcus Carter posted 14 points and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Aaron McFarland scored 12, and freshman Luther Gibbs came off the bench to score 11, and also pull down five rebounds. Gibbs connected on three second-half threes to help the Captains pull away. CNU out-scored FSU in the second half, 52-33.

Junior Rayshard Brown recorded nine points for the day and also dished out a team-high eight assists. Senior Justin Hampton also ended up with nine points on three long-range jumpers.

Frostburg State (4-13, 3-7) was led by senior Tyler Michael's 15 points. The Bobcats out-rebounded the Captains for the day, 39-37.

The Captains win over the Bobcats was the second of the season, following a nine-point triumph at the Freeman Center on December 3rd.

Meanwhile in Arlington, Salisbury recorded a 57-56 victory Saturday at Marymount thanks to a three-pointer in the final seconds, to keep pace with the Captains in the conference standings. It marked the third time this season in conference play the Sea Gulls have won with a basket in their final possession.

CNU will be looking to avenge a last-second loss at Salisbury on December 17th when the teams battle Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
